Introduction to Business - Ethics and Social Responsibility

Ethics are beliefs or ideas about 3 things:
- Right vs Wrong
- Good vs Evil
- Fair vs Unfair

Different people would have different beliefs, especially due to the people of varying race, culture and society. For example, it may be ethical for some people but it may be unethical to other societies. Doing something legal means that we are following the law whereas doing something ethical means doing something that is morally right.

There are 4 areas in business ethics:
- Environment
- Employees
- Investors
- Customer

There are 4 approach to Social Responsibility:
- Obstructionist Approach
- Defensive Approach
- Accommodative Approach
- Proactive Approach

After the lecture, we had a presentation which we were required to do within an hour and to present it in class straight away. However, a technical error occurred when it was our turn. We do have the presentation at hand and these are the presentation titled as "Ethics in Advertising".

REFLECTION
The lesson about ethics appeal a lot to me because I now fully know about the fact that some things that occurred or happened may not entirely be right or wrong. It always has 2 sides to it, which is wither it is illegal but morally right or it is legal but immoral.

I have always wondered about the ethics in the society, especially the one where it is illegal but morally right. For example, someone has been bullied in school for quite some time and the school does nothing about it and a person stands up for the one being bullied and actually imitated their bullying ways onto them instead. In my opinion, it is not right to bully someone. However, when they inflict pain to someone else, they should get caught and be punished the same way as how they treated others. Although it is illegal, but it is morally right.

Introduction to Business - Starting a Small Business

A small business is owned by only one or only several people. It also has a smaller capital if compared to bigger businesses and has a limited amount of customers. Food stalls are an example of a small business. Most of the small businesses are of service industry because it requires lesser capital. They serve as distributors and suppliers of products for bigger businesses.

Niche market refers to a very specific or unique markets. For example, Starbucks has its own unique way of running a coffee business. Small businesses can respond quickly to changes in the market because they are less bureaucratic.

There are 3 types of legal ownership:

Sole traders are businesses that only has one owner. They are the sole proprietor and has full control of the business and its legal paperwork is simple and the cost is low. They se their own goals and objectives without anyone holding them back jet because they do not agree with it. However, the owner is personally responsible for all the debts of the business.

Partnership is a business that has at least 2 or more owners or partners in a company. Businesses like these are able to get capitals easier due to the fact that they have more owners and banks are more willing to lend them money. Legal paperwork is simple and cost is low just like sole traders. The disadvantage for this type of business is that all the owners are personally responsible for the business' debts and owners of the company may argue because they may not have the sam motives or goals in running that business.

Corporation is also known as a company and it can have an infinite amount of owners (or shareholders) in total but a minimum of 2 owners. These companies are recognised as a person. Therefore, the company can buy, sell and own assets just like how a person is able too. It is also treated separately from its owners and is not personally responsible for the debts of the company.

A corporation is divided into 2 which is a private company and a public-listed company. Private companies cannot sell their shares via the share market and can only be sold privately. This way, raising a capital is harder for private companies whereas public-listed company's shares can be bought and sold by anyone in the public. We can become an owner of a certain public-listed company as long as the person buys its shares at the share market.

REFLECTION
After this lesson, I have finally understood what public-listed company means. I always hear this word from my mother, especially whenever she introduces herself to other people and was asked where my mother works and she would always reply "I work in a public-listed company" before she states the name of the company. I was curious what it was but not to the point of asking her about it.

I now also know how hard for owners of private companies to find buyers for their shares. They must have a wide network of people in order to get people to buy their shares to build a bigger company.

Introduction to Business - Definition of a business

My classmates and I who are from Foundation in Design, only started joining the class after a few weeks .This is because there was a conflict in our schedule and it was not properly scheduled for the past weeks. After everything was settled, we were told that we will be joining the Foundation in Natural and Built Environments' business class.

During our first business class, we learned about the definition of a business.

A business is usually a legally-recognized organisation whose purpose is to make profit by selling goods or by providing services to the customers. There are also organisations that are running without profit-seeking motives and they are called Non-Profit Organisations. For example, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Museum Negara.

There are 2 major forms of Business which includes, goods-producing businesses and service business. Consumer products, mining, construction and many more are included in the goods-producing business whereas banking and insurance, entertainment, healthcare, education and many more are included in the service businesses.

Other than that, understanding the external environment is curial for business survival and success, such as:
- Political and Legal Environment
- Sociocultural Environment
- Economic Environment
- Technology
- Global Business Environment
- Domestic Business Environment

REFLECTION
My favourite part of the lesson that I have learnt this week is the part that talks about the non-profit organisation. Most of the companies or organisations in the world either aims to be the top or to be the one that makes the most profits. However, those who are in charge of the Non-Profit Organisations (NPO) should be admired for their generosity.

There are some big and really helpful NPOs in Malaysia such as:
- Malaysian Association for the Protection of Children

- MERCY Malaysia

Assignment 1: Unconventional Self Portrait (Lecture and Process)

Ms Lisa briefed us about this new assignment via Facebook. She posted it on our Foundation in Design's Facebook group so that all of us could see and could also ask her via Facebook Messenger or chat if we have any questions about it.

For this assignment, we are required to do a self portrait, regardless whether we draw, make a sculpture or use something else to represent ourselves. We also need to present it to her along with the explanations and meanings of our design or sculpture.

After I spent some time thinking whether to draw or to make something, I finally decided to make a sculpture for my self portrait assignment. This is because for those who chose Figure Drawing as part of our elective, we also have a self portrait or ourselves. I thought to myself, since I am already drawing one, why not make a sculpture for the other self portrait for a change.

The egg sculpture that I have in mind was a cracked egg. When it is cracked open, there will be a smaller egg. The smaller one is not as fragile as the egg. Therefore, I chose a ping pong ball as it is not too hard that it could not be flattened nor is it too fragile to be crushed.

These are some of the pictures that I used as reference for the cracked egg design:

These are some of the pictures of when I was making the sculpture:
I used balloons to make the shape of an egg as its shape is not round but a little bit oval.

What it looks like after it is cut in half. I made 2 eggs although I only needed one for the assignment. It is an extra egg just in case I failed the first one and I needed to do another at the last-minute would be stressful. It also takes up a lot of time especially the drying process of the paper mache. In the end, the first one was successful and the second one was not needed.

Assignment 2: Expanding Squares Layout and Composition (Presentation)

On the day of the presentation of our assignment, all of us pasted the mounting boards onto the glass wall of the classroom and it looks like a mini-exhibition like always and I really liked that. Each of us presented out artwork to our lecturer, Miss Lisa and she gave comments about our artwork on the spot. My chosen theme was "Geisha". These are my artworks that I presented:

These are some of the artworks that my classmates did for this assignment:

Theme: Mask

Theme: Joker

Theme: Wolf

Assignment 2: Expanding Squares Layout and Composition (Process)

Out of the few sketches that I have made, Miss Lisa chose these two and I made some changes. As for the symmetrical one, I made measurements so that it would be symmetrical. One of the difficulties that I have faced was doing the asymmetrical sketches. Somehow I kept sketching the supposedly asymmetrical into something that looks symmetrical. I made a lot of changes to it and finally it ended up looking asymmetrical. These are the ones that Ms Lisa chose:

While sticking the pieces together, I was in a dilemma about whether it should be stuck together or separated on both sides. I was worried about the one in the second picture because at first it looks a little like symmetrical design. But I decided to stick it that way because that way, I could stick the petals around it and it would look much better. However, I still tried both of the design without putting any glue yet and this is how both of it would look like:

Assignment 2: Expanding Square Layout and Composition

Semester break is over and we are back to campus after a month. Although I wrote this post as Assignment 2, this is actually the first assignment that we did on our first ever class of 2 Dimensional Design. The subject is new to all of us but our lecturer is Miss Lisa, whom we have known for a semester as she taught us Principles of Design last semester.

We started off the class with a lecture about "Expanding the Squares". To summarise the lecture, it is mainly about a design is able to be expanded into different shapes and sizes rather than just having the design cramped up in a square. By doing this, it makes the design look much more interesting. We would also need to play around with the positive and negative spaces. Each of us are required to make one symmetrical and one asymmetrical design, both 4.5" and is only allowed to use 2 colours. After the lecture and explanations regarding our assignment, Miss Lisa showed us some examples. Those examples were done by our seniors and it looks really good.

As usual, we were asked to come up with a few themes and the lecturer will choose one that suits us the most. The themes that I came up with are kimono, koi fish and geisha. In the end, my chosen theme is Geisha. These are some of the sketches:

I got some inspiration from these pictures:
