LECTURE
In this class, we were told to look up for studio portraits taken during the year 1950's to the year 1960's. After that, he assigned us to take a studio portrait of ourselves. We were then assigned to groups of 4 and 5. When a group is taking the photos, the other group will be the ones playing the role of make up artists and helping out with the lightings in the studio. Mr Vinod then gave us instructions on how to use the lightings in the studio.

The first and foremost lighting in the studio is the main light. It is the primary light and usually is the strongest light. The main light is responsible for providing the shape and form of the subject matter.

The fill light is responsible of filling in the shadow areas created by other lights. In general, fill lights should provide an even, non-directional light that adds little character or shadow of its own. The fill light is nearly always weaker than the main light.

Other than that, the hair light is used to enhance hair texture and provide separation from the background. The hair of the subject matter would usually blend into the background especially if the subject matter has darker coloured hair.

Next is the background light. It is used to illuminate the background. If the background light is not used, the background of the photo will look plainly dark and the subject matter may blend in with the background.

The rim light is used to create highlights in the photo. It is also responsible in giving a structure and form to the subject matter. In addition, it forms a silhouette of the subject matter thus giving it a proper shape.
