Assignment 5: Greeting Cards (Presentation)

The day of our presentation of our greeting cards assignment was also the last day of our first semester. Getting back to the presentation, each of us took a spot around the classroom to show our greeting cards on the table as if it was another mini gallery. I was the last one to present my assignment.

As usual, the first thing that pops into a person's mind when Chinese New Year was mentioned was the colour red. Therefore, I chose to use the colour red for the word as well as the card. This Mandarin word is actually a combination of 4 words and it means luck and money comes rolling to us. A little bit of calligraphy can be seen in the word because back in the olden days, citizens of China uses only calligraphy for both writing and drawing.

A close view of the Typography version of a Christmas tree. I used the colour blue for the card because it is a cool colour and Christmas is celebrated on 25th December, which is the season of winter in some countries. The season was the reason as to why I made a spinning snowflake on the cover of the greeting card. As the snowflake was light, it moves around when there is slight wind.

I made bunny ears for the envelope of the Easter greeting card and wrote "Bunnies greet you, they've come to say, 'I wish you well this Easter Day'." In addition, the colour purple is a traditional colour foe Easter Day, hence the fact that I used that colour for the envelope as well as the egg's designs. I chose the colour red, pink, yellow and purple for the colours of the egg because red represents love and sacrifice for the goodness of humanity, pink indicates fresh beginnings, yellow brings joy and happiness and purple was explained earlier. This Easter egg spins as you blow it and you can see the colourful colours as well as the designs as it spins.

Well, enough of my presentation of my assignment. These are a few of my classmate's greeting cards:

Assignment 5: Greeting Cards (Process)

I did some research about greeting cards for Chinese New Year, Christmas and Easter. At first I could not think of any idea on how to make a greeting card for Easter Day as I have not seen an Easter Day greeting card but learning a new thing benefits me. These are some of the images that I found and it inspired me to start on my greeting cards. Credits of the images goes to the owner.

Assignment 5: Greeting Cards (Lecture)

Ms Lisa told us the day before the class that we are required to come up with themes for our next assignment, which was to make greeting cards. We need to propose the ideas to her and she will choose what she thinks would be best for us. Plus, we need to make 3 different greeting cards with the same theme.

The theme that I proposed was:
- Snowflake
- Tribal patterns
- Leaves printing

I came up with a few themes and I also made a few rough sketches:

She told me to use the snowflake as part of my assignment but the theme that she wanted me to do was non of the above. When I showed her the sketchbook, the page on the left caught her eye as it was an assignment that I did for Creative Thinking Skills.

These were the one that caught Ms Lisa's attention as it can be spanned when the book is held upright. Thus, my theme was spinning greeting cards. We discussed about the theme and we decided to make greeting cards for Chinese New Year, Christmas and Easter.

Assignment 4: Colour Theory (Process and Presentation)

Today is the day of the barbecue party for all the 3 intakes from our course, Foundation in Design. Our assignment was associated with the party as we were supposed to provide the entertainment for the evening. Therefore, our class split into 2 groups.

My group prepared a game called Colour Splash. It's a dart game where you have to pop the balloon which were filled with acrylic paint and were pinned on large canvases using thumbtacks. As the balloon popped, the paint will splash around the popped balloon as well as trickling down the canvas making it seem like an abstract art.

The other group prepared a game using poster colour and cooking oil. They prepared trays filled with water with a layer of oil on top. The poster colour which was dropped onto the oil later on floats on the oil. An abstract art was also produced when they dipped a paper onto the oil lightly. Besides that, they also had cupcakes up for grab IF they could guess the flavour of the cupcake.

These are some of the photos of when we were preparing for the game:

These were the acrylic colours that we used to fill the balloons.

We taped part of the canvas so that it has a pattern. It will be taken out after the splashed paint dried.

They are preparing the banner for our game.

We were putting all the balloons into boxes so that it could brought over to the destination of the game.

Pinning the balloons up before the game.

The canvas are full of balloons. Someone already popped the balloon ! But who ?

Both lecturers and students were having fun at Colour Splash. Mr Ernesto was the first one to shoot the balloons and he also managed to pop it.

This is how all the splashed canvases look like. It looked great, right ?

These are he cupcakes that Nick and his sister made that were the ones that were up for grabs.
